How Names Appear in Chats and Questions, and Hiding Your Name
How a Person Is Named
In a live stream's chat and Q&A, in a session's Q&A and in the cross-format chat of a hybrid event, every person appears the same way:
- First name and the initial of the last name, for example "Sarah C."
- Full name when the person's profile is public
- Nobody's email address, company or other profile details are shown in a chat or a question room
Hiding Your Name on a Question
- Write your question in the Q&A box of the stream or the session
- Tick Hide my name from the other attendees (it is there only when the organizer allows it for the event)
- Submit
The other attendees see the question as "Anonymous". This hides your name on the screen, not from the organizer: the organizer and their team can still see who asked, marked "Name hidden by the asker", so that they can moderate, and the question is stored with your account. Do not use it for a question where being identified would put you at risk. Whether your name is hidden is chosen when the question is asked: to change it, delete the question and ask again.
For Organizers
Event Console → Setup → Registration Settings → Questions → Allow attendees to hide their name on questions switches the choice on or off for one event. It is on by default. Turning it off does not change questions that were already asked with a hidden name; they stay hidden.
Good to Know
- Your own question is shown to you with your name or as "You", with a note when your name is hidden from the others
- A person who asked one question with their name and another with it hidden is named on the first and "Anonymous" on the second
- Deleting your question removes it for everyone
